If you have some clear wide-mouth jars or some kind of pretty glass jars, set colorful candles down in the jars. Next, use some fairly heavy gauge wire and wrap around the lip of the jar, leaving 12 inches of wire on two sides sticking out. Use some pliers and twist the wire on both sides, into decorative swirls and curls, whatever you like. Then hang the instant decorative candle holders all over the house. References : myself
Last year, we mad these little origami ornament things as gifts for relatives. They were quite cute! This yer, my mom got a kit to make beaded candy cane ornaments and beaded snowflake ornaments. Then, of course, your could get plain ornament balls or white Styrofoam balls and decorate them. You’d have to paint the Styrofoam balls, though. I suggest painting them gold, silver, red, or green. Decorate them with sequins, rhinestones, and other decorative things you can find. You can also paint the balls with christmassy pictures and add your own personal message. I hopes this helps you. It is always fun to make christmas presents! References :
For inexpensive try Big Lots and buy lots of glitter glue at Michael’s, buy several Christmas glass ornaments (they are very inexpensive there and put the glitter glue on them, you can get some clay pots buy some white and red paint use some glitter on edges and stick poinsettias in them get that green stuff fill the pot stick different colors red, silver or gold and put some moss on top of the pot where the poinsettias were inserted.
You can also purchase tall glass vases and fill them with crystal (acrylic) diamonds, they sell them at Crate and Barell in red and clear, they are very beautiful to accentuate your tables, you can also make your own holiday baskets, fill them with wines, cookies, chocolates all sorts of nuts and different items from Bristol Farms or anything you can buy at Worlds Market.
An easy, useful, and attractive Christmas craft is to make your own wrapping paper. You can get reams of red, green or white colored paper at a crafts store and stamp it with inked potato stamps. To create a potato stamp, start by cutting an Idaho potato through the middle, shortways. Then, you can use a paring knife to cut a design into each flat potato end, cutting away the excess potato bits. Press the stamp into an ink stap pad (you can find colorful ink stamp pads at a crafts store), and press it into your paper to make a design. Then you can wrap gifts with your personalized wrapping paper. References : Experience

personalize ornaments or make ornaments like bunch together three or four pine cones tie them with ribbon and add glue with sprinkles of glitter, use construction paper and cut out Santa, reindeer, wreaths, candy canes or if you are an artist with scissors a nativity scene or use felt and make stockings with their names on them with glitter glue and fill with assorted chocolate or candy canes and they cam use them Christmas after Christmas (: References :
You can make ornaments out of Play Dough. You form it into a cute shape (a Christmas tree or a stocking, etc) and stick a paperclip into the top (make sure it’s inside the Play Dough and that part of it sticks out like a hook). Let it dry for a few days and you’ve got home made ornaments! I used to do this with my mom all the time… she still has many of them and we still use them to decorate the tree every year.
Another project my parents did with me and my siblings was the plastic Christmas wreath. You’ll need:
wire hanger
plastic dry cleaner bags
curly ribbon tied in bundles
ornaments
glue
large piece of cardboard
scissors
Steps:
(1) Place bag on a large piece of cardboard. Fold bag in half lengthwise. Measure up 2" and lay yardstick across bag to keep plastic from slipping. Cut off a 2" wide strip. Cut strip into 7" lengths. Discard any pieces with printing on them. Set strips aside.
(2) Pull the bar (where pants would hang) of the wire hanger downward forming a circle with the hanger.
(3) Starting at the top of the circle, center and tie plastic strips to the wire circle. After tying on 25 plastic strips, tie a bundle of curly ribbon onto the wire. Tie on 25 more plastic strips then another bundle of curly ribbon. At the bottom of the wreath, make the curly ribbon lengths longer. Continue in this manner until the wreath is full and tightly packed.
(4) Glue ornaments evenly-spaced around the wreath. Cut streamers at the bottom of the wreath to different lengths then thread and glue a jingle bell to a few of them. Use scissors to curl the remaining streamers. Fold the hanger portion of the wire into a tight loop. Cover the loop with ribbon. References : Need more ideas? A friend of mine made some really cool looking ornaments with paper. She cut out circles about 4 inches in diameter in a solid color paper, like red or green. Then she cut out a smaller circle, about 3 inches, out of various decorative papers (think scrap booking type papers) Line the top of both circles together, and punch a hole through both. Then use ribbon, or rick rack or a rag strip and tie together. They are just lovely! If you have kids involved you could cut the smaller circle out of white paper and let the kids color them first before you assemble. I am for sure going to do this project with my grand kids. Simple, easy and cheap, yet very nice looking project. References :
My middle daughter was born on December 25th also. Anyway, every year we all do some type of craft and last years is one we still use this year. We took wide mouth clear glass jars. We took Christmas potpourri and a short strand of clear Christmas lights. We put a little of the strand of lights in the jar and then some potpourri and we alternated back and forth winding the lights through the potpourri. We brought the plug and the extra cord out of the top of the jar and then covered the top of the jar with a small white doily. We then tied very thin red and green ribbon around the top to keep the doily in place. This year we just untied the ribbon and replaced the potpourri and when you plug in the lights it heats up the potpourri just enough to make the whole house smell great. References :

the snowman…
a tube sock
rice
cotton
rubber band…small
a little bit of fabric
a black marker pin (permanent)
buttons~optional
mason jar lid, the flat.
place the flat into the tube sock, (it will keep it sitting up in place)
fill the tube sock 1/4 of the way with the rice. (to keep it bottom heavy)
fill it up with the cotton, but not all the way up, where you use the rubber band…
anyways, band it off, and then roll down the top part, and will make your hat..
use the permanent marker to make the coal eyes and the mouth..
use the fabric for a scarf.
the buttons are optional, they can be glued on (hot glue) to the front to make the buttons down the front, but i find it easier to use a brown marker pen to draw the buttons on.
then you can shape the cotton, to make it more of a snowman, use christmas ribbon to make it more festive, or for a snowgirl. sometimes, depends on who it goes to, i’ll put silver glitter on it.

I’m all for concentrating on the tree. One really fun thing is to take all those cool cookie cutters you have accumulated over the years and translate them into fabric. Cut out two gingerbread boys, for a random example, leaving 1/4" of fabric all around for a seam allowance. If you use felt, they are super easy, but you can use all sorts of fabrics. You can decorate them as if they were cookies, using trims and beads and sequins and lace and buttons and whatever you find in Grandma’s sewing scraps. Then sew them together pancake style, with a bit of cotton for stuffing. You don’t have to go crazy turning them if you use felt; if you use woven fabrics, use a button-hole stitch, by hand or machine, to go around without having to turn them inside out. Of course, if you are experienced with stuffing and turning, by all means. Or even put a gusset in and make them three-dimensional, if you are that sort of sewer. Anyway, don’t forget to create something at the top to take a hanger for putting it on the tree. A small loop of ribbon sewn into the seam is enough. Or even a lace with an eyelet right at the top.
Don’t just use the gingerbread boy and girl; use all the cutters, and get your creativity flowing on how you decorate each one. You can sew on or, if you’re not all that good at it, glue on, your trims. But beware; using glue means they may crack off more easily than if they are sewn on before the piece is stuffed. Christmas is often about happy memories. Last year when I took out all my decorations/ornaments to begin ‘dressing-up’, I came across my memorabilia of old, faded, too ‘un-pretty’ things to put out, but because they were from such happy Christmas times past I never want to dump them, especially the ones from when I was a child.
You know what a fresh coat of paint does for anything right and, nail polish, which we ladies have lots of, is enamel paint. These now come in all sorts of glittery, pearlised, iridescent, fabulous colours, (they have cheap ones too). The paint brushes are just the right size and you can trim the bristles for extra fine detail work. Almost finished bottles can be washed out with nail polish remover for mixing/storing your own shades. You need to have handy banana oil (sold at drug stores), which is a thinner that won’t strip the glossy finish, except for the polishes with glitter dust. You can also add your own glitter to colours you’d like to have with a glitter look. A clear top coat can be used for extra shine or to renew colours you want to keep as is.
You won’t believe what wonderful new life I have given back to these antiques, which can’t be bought in stores anymore, unless you have a time machine. Some of the ornaments I’ve given a sort of ‘retro’ finish with a mix of oldstyle with the modern. Your dad will certainly love seeing Christmas revived from his years when you were still his ‘baby’.
Have fun…..I sure did! And PS: Have a Very Merry Colourful Christmas! References :

Do you have any felt around? Cut out shapes of mitts, stockings, trees and glue on trims. You can apply magnets or hang them. Glue 3 small cinnamon sticks together and around the center of the bundle, glue a red ribbon and apply any berries small cones or seeds that are outside. Dry some orange peel and make into a sachet, using xmas print fabric. If you have any of those paper plates with the pretty xmas pictures on them glue trim around the outside and add a bow. You can hang or put a magnet on the back. If you have the matching paper cups, glue ruffled lace to the top and bottom edge and fill the cup with potpourri. References :
Try Paper Snowflakes. I realize your dad is older, but a few years ago the kids and I found great web sites all over the internet that provide Paper Snowflake templates. You just print them out and fold and cut. Then you can decorate, and he can use it on his window, porch or tree.

Get a coloring book with Christmas Pictures. Tape one picture to the table then tape a piece of plastic wrap over it, make sure the plastic wrap is 2 inches larger than the picture all the way around. Pull the plastic tight, but not too tight. Out line the picture with a permanent black marker then color it in with colors of permanent marker. Get a piece of cardboard the size of a normal piece of paper. Measure a piece of tin foil so that it over laps the cardboard 1 inch all the way around. Roll the tin foil lightly in a ball then wrap around the cardboard. Take up the plastic wrap from the table (CAREFUL NOT TO STICK IT TO ITSELF) and place it over the tin foil on the cardboard. Tape the back…TA DAAAA, beautiful shimmering artwork! Have fun. So far everything suggested will cost you a fortune. Try making ornaments for thehouse and tree using a playdoh recipe you can get from the internet It is only flour, salt, water, and a little oil. some also call for cream of tartar. just roll it out flat and use cookie cutters or freehand to make shapes then bake it in a cool oven 250 -300 until its hard them paint it with paints, markers, or food dye. easy, and cheap. you could also make bread dough figurines or wreath, but these need to be uruthaned afterwards. just make bread dough with water instead of milk, and make figures and a skinny wreath. let it sit for about 2 hours, and bake them at about 350 for about 3/4 hour, let cool, uruthane and paint. Cinnamon Ornaments….Per batch..(I make several) 3 containers of cinnamon, 1/4 cup applesauce, and 1 tbsp Elmer’s white glue. Use Metal bowls spoons etc…Mix together till you have a thick wet dough..consistency of a gritty playgough.
roll out so the dough cut is about 1/4 inch. Cut out using any shape you want (stars, bells, gingerbread men, snowmen..etc) Lay out on a flat surface (cookie sheet, or a table covered in wax paper (plastic wrap will stick to it). Somewhere you can leave them 2-3 days to dry (undistrurbed) depending on how thick you cut them out..the thicker the better.) Then take a pencil or something to make a hole at top for ribbons for hanging. Do this while still wet. You will see when they are dry very easily, the dough gets lighter, and dries from outside edges in. Once dry, decorate with ribbons bells, glitter..cinnamon sticks…anything. They are so pretty and they smell amazing! If taken care of they will last more than one year. Have fun! References :
This you can do for under ten dollars. If you go to Home Depot you can by individual ceramic tiles. You can also get wallpaper samples for free. You take the tiles and spray Elmers’ spray glue, place the cut outs from the wallpaper that you chose. Then spray a coat of glue over the wallpaper. These make good paper weights, or coasters. The are fun and very easy to make. References :

Here are a few simple crafts to get you started:
Jeweled Ornaments
Glue jewels (from the craft store) to ornaments. When the glue is dry, put gold glitter glue around the jewel.
Marbleized Ornaments
Take the top off a clear ornament. Put two different colors of paint inside (approx. 1 tsp.each). Turn the ornament until paint swirls to give a marbleized look. Replace top.
Gingerbread Man Cookie Garland
Prepare cookie dough for baking. Punch a hole in each hand with a straw. Cookies will bake with a hole in the hand. When cooled, decorate as desired. Thread a thin ribbon through hands connecting all the gingerbread men. Knot the ribbon and trim ends on an angle. You can also use other Christmas cookie(i.e. snowmen, Santa, etc.).
Peppermint Wreath
Cut out a circle from cardboard. Then cut out the middle. Paint the circle red. Staple a loop of ribbon to the circle (for hanging). Glue on candy canes

this one is easy, fun and gets the kids involved.
take small squares of white paper any size you wish.
fold them in half then in half once more.
then fold two opposite corners together.
cut shapes in the paper on the side that is folded still
and the top edge. wala you have a snowflake.
make garland out of them and you can just
throw them away after the season
try different kinds of paper or glitter on them.
children love this but make sure to give the little ones
kiddy scissors. also get satin or styrofoam balls and
pin sequins and pearls on them decorate anyway you wish
this is a good one for the older kids
for a sweet edible decoration take the round peppermint
candies place about 7 or 8 in a circle touching each other
on wax paper on a cookie sheet bake just until they start
to melt let them cool and tie a bow and a string and you have
peppermint wreathes. they can be saved or eaten.
projects like that make Christmas memories
just remember to have fun at it

Try Paper Snowflakes. I realize your dad is older, but a few years ago the kids and I found great web sites all over the internet that provide Paper Snowflake templates. You just print them out and fold and cut. Then you can decorate, and he can use it on his window, porch or tree.
The kids and I had hours of fun with this the last few years even though my son is now a teenager.

I haven’t done this in years, but it’s fun and looks great!

Have fun!
